Football: Retired Lions defender Baihakki Khaizan salutes Kadir Yahaya and Raddy Avramovic for 'saving his career'

SINGAPORE - Most of his National Football Academy Under-17 team-mates were promoted to form the first batch of Young Lions in 2003, but Baihakki Khaizan was left out because he had not played much of the previous year due to a fractured metatarsal.The lanky teenager was so disappointed that he wanted to give up his football dreams then. But thanks to the timely intervention of two coaches, he went on and eventually played 134 times for the national team, the third most for a Lion, behind Daniel Bennett (142 caps) and Shahril Ishak (138 caps).

LONDON • Unai Emery refused to give up on Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes after seeing his men embarrassed by Wolves in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux on Wednesday.
Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota all scored in the first half to condemn the Gunners to a third defeat in four games, severely denting their hopes of a top-four finish with just three games to go.
While the Arsenal manager Emery admitted that his fifth-placed team (66 points) were outplayed, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos netting a consolation, he insisted they would continue to fight for Champions League football next season. They are in a battle with Tottenham (70 points), Chelsea (67) and Manchester United (64) for two spots in Europe's top club competition.
After their seventh away loss, with just a clean sheet this term, he was asked whether he would have harsh words with his players.
He said: "I am usually very critical with myself and I am angry with myself that we didn't do the game plan, (but) not with the players.
"First, it is with me and after that, my style and idea is to look in front and find a solution, not who is the player who is worst.
"The solution for me is... on Sunday at Leicester, (we) get our best performance and the best possibility to take the three points."
Wolves, who are seventh and remain on course for their best finish since their sixth place in 1980, were clinical in their finishing.
But Arsenal's wounds were also to a large extent self-inflicted - no thanks to careless passing, brittle defending and an erratic display of goalkeeping from Bernd Leno, who was culpable for the hosts' second and third goals.
Emery refused to criticise his No. 1, adding: "I don't want to speak individually about the players. We need to recover our confidence."

Football: Polish fans fined for fighting each other before Euro qualifier, team beat North Macedonia for 3rd win

SKOPJE, NORTH MACEDONIA (AFP, REUTERS) - More than 200 Polish football fans were handed fines for public order offences for fighting each other in Skopjie ahead of Friday's Euro 2020 qualifier against North Macedonia, a court said.
"The 234 Polish nationals, involved in a massive fight in the centre of Skopje, were not convicted in North Macedonia so Poland considered it as mitigating factor. They were sentenced to a pay a fine of €150 (S$232) each," the court announced on Sunday (June 9).
The clash took place in a park near the Tose Proeski Arena, where Poland edged out North Macedonia 1-0 to remain unbeaten in their campaign.
Elsewhere, a further 60 Polish citizens were arrested on Friday and Saturday for other incidents including vandalism but are still waiting to be questioned.
On the field, Poland earned their third win in three games, while Israel beat Latvia 3-0 thanks to an Eran Zahavi hat-trick.
Poland substitute Krzysztof Piatek got the winner with an overhead kick from a corner two minutes into the second half in Skopje, with the visitors having dominated the first period but managing only one shot on target.

North Macedonia had won their previous six home games, scoring 19 goals. Poland are on nine points, two ahead of Israel, in second place after Zahavi's superb performance earned them a comfortable victory in Latvia.
The top scorer of the qualifying phase curled in a fine free kick after 10 minutes and added another on the hour. He completed his second hat-trick in a row in the 81st to take his tally to seven goals in Israel's three qualifiers.
Zahavi had also got three in a 4-2 win over Austria in March.
The Austrians earned their first points by beating Slovenia 1-0 thanks to Guido Burgstaller's 74th-minute winner. He scored on the rebound after Marco Arnautovic's effort was saved.
Austria are fourth on three points, one ahead of Slovenia and one behind third-placed North Macedonia.

Football: Japan's golden oldie 'King Kazu' Miura renews J-League contract before 52nd birthday

TOKYO (AFP) - Former Japan striker Kazuyoshi Miura, who turns 52 next month, has extended his record as the J-League's oldest player after renewing his contract with Yokohama FC, the club said.
The veteran footballer, admiringly nicknamed "King Kazu" for his spirited on-field style, will kick off his 34th career season this year, the second division club announced on Friday (Jan 11).
"I thank fans for supporting me all the time," Miura said in a brief statement.
"I want to work out at full stretch every day... and play as many games as possible by making every minute count."
In 2017, Miura surpassed football's previous professional longevity record and became the oldest player to score a competitive goal in a professional match. Both records were previously held by English legend Stanley Matthews.
Last year he played nine games for Yokohama but failed to score.
Miura left Japan for Brazil in 1982 and signed a contract with Santos FC in 1986 to make his professional debut.
He made his Japan debut in 1990 and pushed for the country's first ever World Cup appearance in 1998 but failed to join the final squad for France despite scoring 55 goals in 89 games for the national side.
He was one of the stars of the professional J-League at its 1993 launch before joining Italy's Genoa on loan the following year.
Miura, who has played for Yokohama since 2005, has said he wants to play on until he turns 60.
Yokohama lost in the first division play-offs last year. Their 2019 season kicks off on February 24.

Abramovich steps in amid racism outrage
LONDON • Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has requested reports on the club's attempts to clamp down on the fans who sang anti-Semitic songs during the Europa League tie against Vidi in Budapest on Thursday.
The Blues have asked the Hungarian club for close-circuit television footage that they hope will enable them to identify the vocal minority of travelling fans responsible for the chanting, which has disgusted Abramovich and others connected to the club.
Manager Maurizio Sarri has told The Daily Mail he "condemned every form of racism and discrimination". Having experienced it himself while managing in Italy, he also felt it was not just an English problem as "there are some stupid people all over the world".
Midfielder Cesc Fabregas agreed, saying he was happy for the club to be taught a lesson if it led to better behaviour from their supporters.
The Spaniard said: "The focus now is on Chelsea for what happened. Unfortunately, if we look around carefully all over the world, all sports, all football clubs, we will find things like that.
"The people that did it, they will be punished for it and they will be taught a big lesson in their lives. The quicker we get rid of these people, the better. This is not the real face of Chelsea."
Chelsea will issue life bans to any miscreants whom they are able to identify, although that may not be straightforward because the incident took place at an away ground where they do not control the ticketing arrangements.
Abramovich has been kept informed of Chelsea's attempts to combat racist behaviour, which include cooperating with an inquiry by London police into a supporter who allegedly racially abused Raheem Sterling during last Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City.
The club have since temporarily suspended four people over that incident.
While Abramovich, who is a Russian Jew, has not been to home games this term after being denied a visa to enter the United Kingdom in May, he has followed Chelsea's progress closely and is passionate about eradicating a problem that has afflicted the club for years.
He took a prominent role this year in Chelsea launching a campaign against anti-Semitism, which is a problem among some fans that is exacerbated when they play Tottenham, who are known to have a big Jewish fan base.
While Uefa is still looking into the reports before deciding on any further action, a possible sanction could result in the closure of a section of Stamford Bridge for a Europa League knockout tie.
The ongoing racial storm threatens to overshadow their league game at Brighton, where Sarri's men are hoping to build on their morale-boosting win over champions City last weekend.
But Seagulls manager Chris Hughton feels off-field events will have little bearing on the pitch, saying: "They've adapted very well (to Sarri), any team that beats City at the moment has to have quality. The likes of Chelsea have so many threats that it's difficult to cope with all of them."
