Football: Guardiola hopes Champions League pain spurs on Manchester City

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola wants the pain of Manchester City's gut-wrenching Champions League elimination at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur to inspire a charge for an unprecedented domestic treble.
Guardiola's side take on Spurs at the Etihad Stadium again on Saturday (April 20) after VAR ruled out what would have been a stoppage-time winner for City and denied them a place in the last four as they went out on away goals after having already celebrated victory.
Now City, who lifted the League Cup in February, will focus on trying to hold off Liverpool and retain their Premier League title in their final five league games, before taking on Watford in the FA Cup final.
"I don't want the players to forget what they lived through on Wednesday. It will take time, we have to live with that feeling," he said.
"More than 55,000 people happy then devastated in a second. There is not an activity in this world you can put in these limits."
While City now only have domestic matters to concentrate on, leaders Liverpool - who have played a game more - have a Champions League semi-final on the horizon.
But Guardiola was adamant City would gain no advantage from being absent from midweek European action for the remainder of the season.

"I would prefer to be in the semi-finals and the quadruple closer," he said.
"There is no advantage at this stage. In November and December, when you have more games, maybe.
"Like Liverpool went out of both cups early, we played nine or 10 more games. But now at this stage of the season, it isn't any influence on the rest."
Meanwhile former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager Guardiola believes his star-studded City side will be a better team for their Champions League exit.
We have to live with these situations, accept them. It will be on our minds but looking back it will help us to move forward," he added.
"A tough night but the day after we move forward. These players have the opportunity to show they can do that.
"They can get back what they deserve, this season or the next or three or four years. They will be in the same position and they'll be luckier and go to the next stages."

Football: Kane included in England's Nations League squad despite injury

ENGLAND (REUTERS) - England captain Harry Kane has been included in Gareth Southgate's squad for June's Nations League finals despite an ankle injury, the Football Association said on Thursday.
Kane, who has not played since sustaining the injury in Tottenham's Champions League win over Manchester City on April 9, faces a race against time to be fit for the final of that competition against Liverpool on June 1.
England play their Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands on June 6, and Southgate is hopeful the striker will complete a full recovery over the next three weeks.
Kane is one of nine Champions League finalists named in the 27-man squad and Southgate is wary of fatigue concerns heading into the final stretch of the Nations League campaign.
"Post the Champions League final, we are going to have to assess everyone really," Southgate told a news conference.
"It is a strange situation for us but we have always adapted and we have always managed to achieve results with new players, with young players, so this looks like being the same.
"It is going to be a lot of uncertainty about who is going to be available until the last minute, but we have got a really strong squad with a lot of talent and we are looking forward to these matches."

Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek missed out on a place in the squad after his injury in a friendly in the United States on Wednesday, but fellow midfielders Declan Rice and James Ward-Prowse are involved again.
Southampton winger Nathan Redmond, overlooked since winning his solitary England cap in March 2017, returns to the squad after a strong finish to the domestic season which earned him the Player of the Year award at his club.
"It is a really good opportunity for Nathan," Southgate added.
"I think the new manager (Ralph Hasenhuettl) has had a positive effect: a lot of pace, playing the high press and he has started to score more regularly." Following the Netherlands clash in Guimaraes, England will face either hosts Portugal or Switzerland in a final or third-place playoff on June 9.
Full squad: Goalkeepers: Jack Butland, Tom Heaton, Jordan Pickford Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Joe Gomez, Michael Keane, Harry Maguire, Danny Rose, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker Midfielders: Ross Barkley, Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice, James Ward-Prowse, Harry Winks Forwards: Harry Kane, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Nathan Redmond, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Callum Wilson.

Football: Neymar ruled out for four weeks with ankle injury, says PSG

PARIS (REUTERS) - Brazil striker Neymar is expected to be out of action for four weeks after picking up an ankle injury in a Copa America warm-up game this week, his club Paris St Germain said on Saturday (June 8).
The 27-year-old Neymar was hurt in a 2-0 win over Qatar on Wednesday and was ruled out of the Copa America which starts on June 14 in Brazil.
"The two (club) doctors diagnosed a sprain of the lateral ligament of the right ankle without surgical indication, to be treated with conservative treatment," PSG said in a statement.
"The Paris St Germain striker is expected to return on the field in four weeks time."
Neymar has been accused by a woman of raping her at a Paris hotel last month, according to a police report.
He has denied the accusation which is being investigated by Sao Paulo police.

Football: What's next for Neymar after injury woes, rape allegations?

Football: What's next for Neymar after injury woes, rape allegations?

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Forced out of the Copa America by injury, star striker Neymar faces an uncertain playing future in Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil where he is engulfed in an alleged rape scandal.
The player vehemently denies the accusation, which has dominated headlines and dogged Brazil's preparations for the Latin American tournament which starts on June 14.
Here's what could happen next for the world's most expensive footballer.

1. Image tarnished

Beyond the potential sporting consequences of missing Copa America, Neymar's image has taken a serious blow.
Shortly before the 27-year-old player was injured in the Brazil-Qatar friendly in Brasilia on Wednesday, his accuser told a Brazilian broadcaster that she had been the victim of "aggression together with rape".
Hours later, a video circulated on social media showing the young woman hitting Neymar in a hotel room and accusing him of assaulting her the day before.
Sponsors are clearly worried. Mastercard has cancelled an advertising campaign starring Neymar that was to be broadcast during the Copa America, Spanish media reported. Nike expressed its "deep concern" on Monday.

"Only football can save him," Fox Sports commentator Paulo Vinicius Coelho told AFP.
"It's enough that he focuses on his game. He showed this season with PSG that he is still capable of playing great matches."

2. Fake or fate?

Few Brazilian football fans or commentators appear to believe Neymar faked his injury so he could pull out of the Copa America due to the rape allegation.
"I don't believe in a fake injury, for me the image clearly evokes a ruptured ankle ligament," Coelho said.
But the timing raised eyebrows, coming shortly after a senior Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) official had publicly suggested that Neymar would pull out of the tournament. CBF vice-president Francisco Noveletto was quoted by Brazilian media on Tuesday as saying he was willing to "bet" that Neymar would quit.
"He doesn't have the psychological condition to face the Copa America and journalists," Noveletto said.
That prompted CBF president Rogerio Caboclo to insist on Wednesday - for the second time this week - that Neymar would play in the tournament despite the rape accusations.
While some social media users looked to conspiracy theories to explain Neymar's injury, most put the incident down to fate.
"Fate has brought a solution to a problem that neither (coach) Tite nor the CBF or Neymar himself had the courage to solve for the sake of the Brazilian team and especially the player - to remove him from the eye of the storm," wrote a Twitter user.

3. Sidelined

Neymar is scheduled to return to the football field with PSG on Aug 3 for the Champions Trophy game against Rennes in Shenzhen, China.
But it is not clear if he will have physically recovered by then. It took Real Madrid youngster Vinicius Junior, who suffered a ruptured ankle ligament in March, two months to return to the game.
And there is also the chance Neymar could miss the match for a non-sporting reason as he faces police investigations stemming from the alleged rape.

"I ask myself why he has had so many physical hiccups in recent years when he was injured very little early in his career," Coelho said, referring to the foot injuries that sidelined Neymar for several months this year and last season.
Rumours have circulated in recent weeks that Neymar could return to FC Barcelona, but his recurring injuries and tarnished image could put off the Catalan club where Neymar played from 2013 to 2017 before his record €222 million (S$341.5 million) transfer to PSG.
Brazil's national coach Tite, who has described Neymar as "indispensable" to the national team, but also not "irreplaceable", is looking for a substitute.
Vinicius Junior or Lucas could be called up. Another alternative is Ajax Amsterdam's David Neres.

Ole's 'reality check' as United see the gap

LONDON • For around 20 minutes at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, it felt like the Champions League glory days were back for Manchester United.
The capacity 74,000 crowd was in full voice, United were attacking Paris Saint-Germain down the flanks with speed and aggression and their opponents looked shaky.
That feeling lasted until the French champions began to get a grip on the game and, by the end of the night, a 2-0 win for PSG in the last-16, first-leg clash served only to highlight the gulf that remains between this United team and the European elite.
"It's a reality check, you can see the strength they have," United's caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after they lost to two quickfire second-half goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe.
"They had the momentum after the first goal and controlled the game. You could see we hadn't played at this level for a while and we will have to learn.
"That's the level we want to get to. We've been talking about top four (Premier League), but we also want to be at the top (in Europe)."
The Norwegian has finally tasted his first defeat since taking over 12 games ago in December.
But while United were outclassed technically and outwitted tactically, it could also be said that they were not helped by referee Daniele Orsato, who arguably should have sent off Kimpembe for a second bookable offence before his goal.
Instead, United midfielder Paul Pogba saw red in the 89th minute after receiving a contentious second yellow card, in a match which Orsato dished out 10 yellows in total.
United also lost forwards Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard to muscle injuries and replacements Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata failed to step up.
In the absence of Martial and Lingard, United had little pace and dynamism and lost the high press they used so successfully early on.
PSG had to cope without the injured Neymar and Edinson Cavani, yet remained a threat throughout.
That is the kind of strength in depth United will need to build if they are to return to being the kind of force in Europe that they were under former boss Alex Ferguson.
PSG's quality was in full display and coach Thomas Tuchel also had his tactics spot on.
The defeat is United's first by a margin of more than a goal at home in European competition.
Solskjaer insisted, however, that the loss will not wreck the momentum United have built up in the Premier League and their confidence ahead of the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Chelsea on Monday.
"No, not at all because at this club we have to bounce back. The Champions League is always going to be difficult, but our bread and butter is the (domestic) league so (I'm) not afraid of that," he said.
"When we go to Paris, we'll give it a go. It is a difficult mountain to climb, but not impossible. Mountains are there to be climbed."
Only once since the 2010-11 season have United won a Champions League knockout game and, with Pogba suspended, the odds are stacked against that changing in the French capital on March 6.
