Football: Ikhsan Fandi the match-winner as Singapore Under-22s beat Thais 1-0 to capture Merlion Cup

SINGAPORE - The Young Lions' hopes of making it to at least the semi-finals of this year's SEA Games - after group-stage eliminations in 2015 and 2017 - will be boosted after they beat the Thailand Under-22s 1-0 to win the Merlion Cup final on Sunday (June 9).
In front of 3,477 fans, including local tycoon Peter Lim who followed the action from the VIP stand at Jalan Besar, Fandi Ahmad's team created history by becoming the first Singapore team to win the competition outright in eight editions.
In 1985, the Lions had finished joint champions with the Yugoslav Olympic team.
Fandi said: "I'm very happy because it has been some time since we last won a trophy. It is important we learn from this victory and build on this for the years to come."
In recent years, it has become an undisputed fact that Singapore are behind Thailand in terms of pace and technique.

But it is never a given that stronger teams always win. It is up to weaker teams to be hungrier and find a way outwit their opponents, be it through well-drilled tactical moves, well-rehearsed set-pieces or simply making the most of the limited opportunities in the game.
And that was the case for the Singapore U-22s as they manfully held their defensive shape. Midfielder Jacob Mahler was in the wars as he provided a superb screen for goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad and centre-backs Irfan Fandi and Lionel Tan.
In front of them, Joshua Pereira was equally tenacious, while Man of the Match Hami Syahin was composed with the ball and distribution.
Thailand U-22 coach Alexandre Gama perhaps paid the Young Lions the best compliment when he said: "We could not play our football because Singapore did very well to run and press. They impressed me with their high level of physical condition. They were tall and strong, and their attitude was amazing."
And perhaps most importantly, the Young Lions now have a clinical poacher in Ikhsan Fandi, who has grabbed six goals in his last seven games for club and country.
The Raufoss striker, who scored in a 34-minute cameo during the 3-0 win over the Philippines in the semi-finals on Friday, came on in the 32nd minute on Sunday and took just four minutes to make an impression.
The 20-year-old took advantage of a defensive mix-up in the Thai ranks to round Korraphat Nareechan, who had charged out of his box. And despite a slip, Ikhsan still managed to bury his shot into the bottom corner.

The rest of Fandi's team also impressed.
They pressed hard aggressively to retrieve possession and won numerous free-kicks in wide positions in the Thailand's half, which gave Irfan the chance to attack Syahrul Sazali or Hami's deliveries.
However, it is important to note that while Thailand were able to call 1.98m Italian-born defender Marco Ballini, they were missing key players such as Buriram attackers Supachok Sarachat and Supachai Jaided who were called up to the senior team.
The rule change to allow two overaged players for the year-end SEA Games in the Philippines could also be a gamechanger should Thailand capitalise on their depth and include established stars like Chanathip Songkrasin and Teerasil Dangda.
Fandi said: "We will be underdogs at the SEA Games. We need to have a good training game to keep up our fitness levels. It is not that we don't have good players, but we need a good strategy that fits what we have and we got to play to our strengths."
Hami added: "It means a lot to win a trophy on home ground in front of our own fans. We had no fear of Thailand even before today, we believed we could beat them but we should focus on improving ourselves and not on others.
"This is a good stepping stone on us and we should build on the momentum from this competition and the AFC Under-23 qualifiers (in March when Singapore were unbeaten against Hong Kong, North Korea and Mongolia)."
In the earlier third-place play-off yesterday, Indonesia U-22s beat their Filipino counterparts 5-0.

MADRID (AFP) - Karim Benzema stopped Real Madrid's underwhelming La Liga season going from bad to worse on Sunday (March 31) after firing a last-minute winner to hand the European champions a barely-deserved 3-2 winner over bottom club Huesca.
Humbled by Ajax in the Champions League and dumped out of the Copa Del Rey by deadly rivals Barca, third-placed Real showed little signs of improvement in Zinedine Zidane's second game in charge but Benzema struck with a fine curling finish the to snatch the three points.
Real move to within two points of second-placed Atletico Madrid, who hammered Champions League hopefuls Alaves 4-0 on Saturday in a match that saw Diego Costa score for the first time since November.
However Real still lag 12 points behind leaders Barcelona, who are 10 clear of Atletico and heavy favourites to retain their La Liga after Lionel Messi fired them to their sixth league win on the bounce, 2-0 at home to local rivals Espanyol on Saturday, with a brace that took the Argentine to 31 league goals this season.
Zidane's son Luca was given his second ever start between the sticks for Real but got off to the worst possible start, picking the ball out of his own net within three minutes after Cucho Hernandez lashed home Ezequiel Avila low cross.
Isco levelled the scores in the 25th minute when he tapped home a Brahim Diaz cross after Benzema's low shot was well saved, but it was the away side - playing their first ever La Liga game at the Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium - who went closer going into the break ahead.
Zidane junior had to be alert to stop Damian Musto from glancing home a header nine minutes before the break, while Avila punched the ground in frustration in first half stoppage time after flashing a power shot over from the edge of the box.

Real continued to disappoint in the second half but took the lead just after the hour mark thanks to Dani Ceballos, who bundled home the second after Gareth Bale's beautiful cross was headed back across goal by Benzema.
Bale then missed a glorious opportunity to put the game beyond Huesca when he somehow put Alvaro Odriozola's low cross over the bar from just yards out.
Huesca pounced on that awful miss to draw level when Xabier Etxeita powered home Moi Gomez's cross from a short corner.
However Benzema was on hand to break Huesca hearts with his fine finish, which gives Zidane two wins from his first two matches back in charge.
Earlier Valencia maintained their hopes of a place in next season's Champions League after Daniel Parejo's penalty on the stroke of half-time gave them a vital 1-0 victory at Sevilla.
Parejo's spot-kick, which came after Ever Banega brought down Jose Gaya, extended Valencia's unbeaten run to nine matches and moves them up to sixth, level on 43 points with Sevilla and just three back from the final Champions League spot.
That place is occupied by Getafe, who fell 2-0 at home to mid-table Leganes on Saturday and have to play the league's top three and Sevilla in their final nine games.
Despite a slightly simpler league fixture list Marcelino's Valencia however have an all-Spanish Europa League quarter-final tie with Villarreal to contend with, as well as the Copa Del Rey final against Barcelona between now and the end of the season.

LONDON (AFP) - Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has been appointed manager of Oldham Athletic, the club announced on Monday (Feb 11).
Scholes, 44, is taking on his first managerial role, signing a contract with the club he supported as a boy after spending his entire playing career at Old Trafford.
The former Premier League club are languishing in mid-table in League Two, the fourth tier of the English game.
"Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce footballing legend Paul Scholes as the new first-team manager on a one-and-a-half-year-deal," the club said in a statement.
"I couldn't be any happier at the minute," Scholes told Oldham's official website. "It's been a while. Obviously there's been talk of it when I finished my (playing) career.
"It wasn't something I was quite ready to do and there's obviously been three or four times over the last six years where it could have happened and I've not been quite ready."
Scholes, a member of Manchester United's famed "Class of '92" alongside David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, said he wanted to entertain Oldham's fans.
"I want my team to be aggressive and focused on winning first and foremost," he said. "I know it's not going to happen every week, but I go into every game expecting to win."
Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam said: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football.
"He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see."
Manchester United wished Scholes luck, saying in a message on Twitter: "Best of luck to Scholesy in his new role as first-team manager of @OfficialOAFC!" United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, preparing his team to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday, wished his former team-mate luck.
"Watch the pundits because he's been asking for it," joked the Norwegian, referring to Scholes's outspoken comments as a TV critic.
"It's fantastic to have Scholesy back in the game because he was a fantastic player to play with, great personality. It's a challenge for him.
"I know it wasn't what he thought he was going to do when he was a player. But that drug of football when you don't get it, Paul is one of them, he loves football."
Scholes, who owns a stake in non-league Salford, will step down from his role as director of the National League club, who could be in competition with Oldham next season if they win promotion from the fifth tier.
The English Football League gave Scholes the go-ahead to join Oldham last week, ruling that there was no conflict of interest.
He will take charge of his first match against Yeovil at Oldham's Boundary Park ground on Tuesday.

Chelsea can't sign players for two windows

LONDON â€¢ Chelsea have been banned from the transfer market for two windows, after Fifa found them guilty of a serious and systemic breach of the rules regarding their dealings with foreign players under the age of 18.
The governing body announced the sanction yesterday at the end of an investigation into the club and how they registered players at their academy over several years.
The Guardian revealed last month that Fifa had looked into more than 100 player cases at Chelsea. Fifa said that the club had been found guilty of 29 breaches of Article 19 - the most serious infringements relating to the registration of minors and several others.
Chelsea have been fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$811,000) and given 90 days to "regularise the situation of the minor players concerned", which could involve them being forced to move on anyone brought to the club in contravention of the regulations.
In a statement yesterday, Chelsea said: "Chelsea FC categorically refutes the findings of the Fifa Disciplinary Committee and will therefore be appealing the decision."
It is possible they could delay their punishment until after this summer's window via appeals, which can be time-consuming, meaning they would be free to make signings between the beginning of June and the end of August.
But the news is a blow for Chelsea at a time when the manager Maurizio Sarri is clinging to his job, having lost the confidence of the Stamford Bridge crowd.
Eden Hazard, the club's star, has suggested that he fancies a summer move to Real Madrid while David Luiz, Willian, Pedro and Callum Hudson-Odoi are among the others who may not be at Stamford Bridge next season.
Fifa's basic rule is that clubs cannot bring in players under 18 from other countries, unless their parents have emigrated for reasons not connected to football or both the player and club are based within 50km of a national border.
Chelsea contended that the majority of the 100-plus player cases involved short-term triallists at their academy, who did not go on to sign for them.
They argued there is no law against trialling Under-18 international players and, as such, they believed these cases ought not to have been included in the final judgment.
Fifa has in the past brought successful prosecutions against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid for infringements related to the signing of minors and its pursuit of these cases springs from a determination to help protect children from potential exploitation and trafficking.
The Spanish clubs were given a two-window ban, although Real served only one after a successful appeal to CAS.
In the January window, Chelsea signed Christian Pulisic and loaned the Â£58 million (S$102 million) player back to Borussia Dortmund until he joins them in the summer.
They also took Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus until the end of the season, with options to extend the loan or sign him permanently.
The club denied that the moves were in reaction to the threat of a transfer ban.
On the field, there were at least some positives after a 3-0 Europa League win over Malmo on Thursday put Chelsea into the last 16 with a 5-1 aggregate. They will next meet Ukraine's Dynamo Kiev.
The Blues will next take on Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley tomorrow.
Arsenal overcame a 1-0 deficit to also move into the last 16 with a 3-1 aggregate win over Bate Borisov. Their next opponents are French club Rennes.

SOUTHAMPTON, United States (REUTERS) - Late goals by Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson earned Liverpool a crucial 3-1 victory at Southampton to move them back to the top of the Premier League on Friday (April 5).
For the second week running Liverpool looked like losing ground on Manchester City in a titanic title race, but once again Juergen Klopp's side would not be denied as they edged a step closer to a first league title since 1990.
With games running out they lead City by two points, although Pep Guardiola's champions have a game in hand.
Locked at 1-1 Liverpool were laying siege to the Southampton goal but it was Salah, who had not scored for eight games, who provided the moment of magic they desperately required in the 80th minute, racing away to score a majestic solo goal.
It was Salah's 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool and six minutes later Henderson, on as a substitute, wrapped it up with a close-range finish.
Shane Long had made it a nail-biting night for Liverpool's massed ranks of supporters when he fired relegation-threatened Southampton ahead in the ninth minute.
But Liverpool recovered from a surprisingly sluggish start and Naby Keita's header, his first goal for the club, levelled the scores before halftime.

Victory lifted Liverpool to 82 points from 33 games, with City on 80 from 32.
"It was very big. Every game is massive. We've got to win every game. I thought we showed great character in the first half," Henderson told Sky Sports.
"It was a big performance in the second half and a big result."
Liverpool needed a stoppage-time winner to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield last weekend and they were forced to do things the hard way again at St Mary's.
They were caught cold early on and Long punished them, calmly firing home after Ryan Bertrand's cross was flicked on.
It could have been worse with Long almost making it 2-0 but Keita's header calmed the nerves in the away ranks.
Liverpool dominated after the break but Southampton defended tenaciously, even if they were lucky when Maya Yoshida appeared to bring down Keita in the penalty area.
With the clock ticking down and Southampton enjoying a brief flurry of pressure, Liverpool broke and Salah drove forward at pace, making around 50 metres without a challenge before firing the ball past Angus Gunn.
Southampton, who remain five points above the drop zone, were flattened and Liverpool were spared any late frights when Roberto Firmino found Henderson who stroked home.
An ecstatic Klopp joined in the celebrations on the pitch with his players who face Chelsea at home next week.
"We have 82 points now, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us. I am really proud. It is incredible," the German said.

SINGAPORE - Alarm bells might have rung at Old Trafford after Manchester United's 2-0 loss to cross-town rivals City on Wednesday (April 24), with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer supposedly summoned to a crisis meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
But former United player Wes Brown saw a glimmer of hope in the loss, one that could spark a reversal of fortunes that will - with a bit of luck - propel the Red Devils to a top-four finish this season.
"City have been the best team in the league over the last two years and they could not ease up on any games as well, and I felt we did well in the first half," said the 39-year-old former defender.
"We kept the ball well, pressed a bit... then City came out in the second half and scored two goals; I am sure David (de Gea) will be disappointed, especially with the second goal, but mistakes do happen."
United are currently in sixth place on 64 points, two behind Arsenal and three behind Chelsea, and with an inferior goal difference to both sides. There are three games to go this season, with the Red Devils facing the Blues in a must-win game on Sunday.
"The fourth spot is still alive, I reckon," added Brown, who will be watching the game with local United fans at the Clarke Quay Fountain Square at the Football Moments event, presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media.
"We have to win all our games from now and hope there's a fall somewhere else. It's all about creating our own chances, and getting a bit of luck on our side."

Like United, Chelsea and Arsenal have blown hot and cold at the business end of the season.
Chelsea have won just three of their last seven Premier League games, dropping points at home to the likes of Wolves and Burnley, while Arsenal have lost three of their last four league games.

When asked what he felt had gone wrong, Brown, who played alongside Solskjaer in United's legendary treble-winning side of 1999, said: "I wish I could tell you!
"There's obviously been a drop in confidence from somewhere, but I know from my playing days that when that happens, you just have to work harder as a team and pull it out from somewhere."
The former England international added that, regardless of whether or not United qualify for next season's Champions League, having the right players at the club next season will be crucial.
There has been speculation over the futures of goalkeeper De Gea, record signing Paul Pogba and misfiring striker Romelu Lukaku in recent weeks, to name a few.
Said Brown: "It's not like you can get rid of seven or eight players and bring in the same number of top quality players in one summer. It'll take a period of time.
"But I'm sure Ole has got players in mind he wants to sign, and I'm sure he wants them in early. He knows what he needs.
"For example, after (the 4-0 loss at) Everton he talked about wanting more running, wanting people to be fitter.
"Ole's watching and seeing everyday in training, and he understands who has been giving it their all and who hasn't."

Martial signed from Monaco for an initial Â£36 million ($47 million) and became the most expensive teenager in the world but until recently it appeared a matter of when rather than if he would leave Old Trafford.
The forward's agent Philippe Lamboley indicated in June that his client wanted to seek a new challenge and former boss Jose Mourinho was reportedly willing to sell him, although executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward made clear he wanted to keep the player.
Martial was fined by Mourinho after failing to return to the club's pre-season tour of the United States following the birth of his second child and was on the fringes of the side in the early weeks of the campaign.
But the Frenchman has been an integral part of the side since Solskjaer replaced the sacked Mourinho in December.
"Anthony is one of those naturally gifted players that any coach would love to work with," said the Norwegian interim boss.
"For a young man, he has a good footballing brain which, when coupled with his exceptional talent, makes for a player with an exciting future ahead of him." While Martial commits his future to the club, Marouane Fellaini is reportedly set to end his five-and-a-half year stay at Old Trafford, with United understood to have reached an agreement in principle regarding his sale to Chinese club Shandong.
It is understood that the Belgium international has already passed a medical, leaving paperwork and final terms to iron out.
Fellaini posted an Instagram photo of himself at an airport on Thursday, with the phrase "let's go" written across it.

Spurs looked on course for victory, having taken the lead through Harry Kane's 26th-minute goal and they were utterly dominant against their relegation-threatened opponents on Saturday.
But then came a quite incredible turnaround after the break as the Saints recorded their first home victory over Spurs since returning to the Premier League in 2012.
Yan Valery equalised before James Ward-Prowse scored the winner nine minutes from time as Spurs threw away their advantage.
Spurs were incredibly poor after the interval, especially in defence, and their manager, who was forced to watch from the directors' box, having been hit with a two-game ban for improper conduct, was not sparing in his criticism.
"It is so difficult to understand the way we played the second half," said Pochettino. "We showed a lack of hunger that you need to kill the game and, if you want to be a contender, to fight for things, you cannot play like this.
"We started to take some risks that were unnecessary and that was the main problem. It gave them belief and they started to build their game.
"When you lose the momentum after 45 minutes, that is about mentality, that is about being strong and keeping it right."
Spurs have three defeats and a draw from their past four league games, a curious run given their fine Champions League last-16 victory over Borussia Dortmund and one that puts their hopes of finishing third in jeopardy.
Admitting that it would be a "massive challenge" for Spurs to stay ahead of their top-four rivals, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all within striking distance, Pochettino added: "We are fighting against big sides.
"People talk about perceptions, but we need to realise if you do not fight with intensity for the Champions League, you will struggle.
"We had a big gap, welcome to the reality, we are under pressure to win games."

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Three-times champions Iran came through an early scare before marching confidently into the Asian Cup quarter-finals for the 13th time in 14 attempts with a 2-0 victory over a spirited Oman team on Sunday (Jan 20).
Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand saved an Oman penalty in the opening minute but a goal from winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh and a successful spot-kick from captain Ashkan Dejagah put them firmly in control at halftime.
The Iranians were unable to add any more goals in the second half but there was never any real doubt they would return to the same stadium on Thursday to meet Marcello Lippi's China, 2-1 winners over Thailand in Al Ain earlier on Sunday.
"It started with an unusual situation and a great save (but) we controlled the whole game and we could have stopped it earlier with a third or fourth goal," said coach Carlos Queiroz.
"We can't miss those kind of chances. We need to play with a killer instinct, we need to put those opportunities in the net."
Oman, in the knockout stages of the Asian Cup for the first time and roared on by a large part of the 32,000 crowd, never flagged and will forever ponder what might have been had Ahmed Mubarak converted the early penalty.
Striker Muhsen Al-Ghassani, Oman's best player, was hauled down by centre back Majid Hosseini but Beiranvand dived low to his right to deny the Oman skipper, just as he had Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo at last year's World Cup.
The quality of Iran's forward line was always going to cause Oman problems and Sardar Azmoun had the first of many shots at goal as early as the fourth minute.
Jahanbakhsh was soon causing the Oman defence problems down the right flank but it was from a more central position that he opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, pouncing on a defensive error and poking the ball into the net.
Dejagah doubled the lead five minutes before the break after Mehdi Taremi had been bundled over in the box but Al-Ghassani quickly gave a reminder that Oman were not done with a powerful shot that Beiranvand tipped over the bar.
Oman coach Pim Verbeek switched to a 4-4-2 formation at the break to chase the game but that opened up more space at the back and only the profligacy of the Iran forwards kept the lead at two goals.
Taremi and Azmoun vied for the title of worst offender but the Iran defence, yet to concede a goal in four matches, ensured Team Melli remained on track to end the 43-year drought since their last continental title in 1976.
"The penalty would have helped (but) we tried everything possible to score a goal and Iran kept us under control," said Verbeek, adding that he would be staying on as coach of Oman.
