Alli confident 'strong squad' can end trophy wait
LONDON • Dele Alli has pledged to end Tottenham's 11-year wait for a major trophy as his side head into an explosive League Cup semi-final showdown with Chelsea tonight.
Spurs have not won a major competition since beating the Blues in the 2008 final. They also lost to the same team in the 2015 final.
The four-time Cup winners are still in the Champions League and FA Cup, and also have an outside chance in the Premier League title race. But it is the League Cup that presents their first chance to end the silverware drought.
While the competition is often written off as an after-thought for top clubs, England star Alli is adamant it could be the first major prize for highly regarded manager Mauricio Pochettino, yet to win a trophy in his coaching career with Spurs, Southampton and Espanyol.
"I think every game, every competition, you want to win it," Alli said.
Spurs crushed fourth-tier Tranmere 7-0 in Friday's FA Cup third round using only three first-team regulars, including Alli, in a bid to keep the key men fresh for Chelsea.
Alli expects the plan to pay dividends, saying: "I believe we've got a strong squad.
"Players work hard to make sure we're fully fit and the manager makes changes. I think he's very good at that."
Chelsea, who host the second leg on Jan 22, will give late fitness tests to Olivier Giroud (ankle) and winger Pedro (hamstring).
Manager Maurizio Sarri is unsure whether midfielder Cesc Fabregas has played his last game but he feels the Spaniard must leave for the good of his career.
Fabregas, 31, appeared to say goodbye after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest, applauding all sides of Stamford Bridge. His contract expires this season, with British media reporting he is close to securing a move to Monaco this month.
"I don't know if he is able to play tomorrow because in the last match he had cramp in the calf so he needs to rest I think," Sarri said yesterday.
"I don't know the decision of the club. In my opinion, he needs to go."

PARIS • Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe fuelled speculation surrounding his future on Sunday, saying he wants "responsibilities, maybe at PSG, maybe elsewhere".
The 20-year-old backed up his outstanding World Cup campaign in Russia, where he scored four times as France lifted the trophy, to net 38 times in all competitions for his club this term.
He was named both the Ligue 1 Player of the Season and Young Player of the Year on Sunday, but hinted at a move away from the French champions.
After claiming his prize, he told beIN Sports: "It (the award) is an important moment for me, a turning point in my career... I am whole. When I say something, I think about it. If it's at PSG, it's good, if it's elsewhere, it will be elsewhere for a new challenge."
Mbappe has been regularly linked with a blockbuster move to Real Madrid since his breakthrough with Monaco's 2017 Ligue 1 title-winning team. Instead, he made the switch to PSG last summer on loan, and will seal a permanent deal for €180 million (S$276.2 million) this year.
But since Zinedine Zidane's return to the Real dugout earlier this year, rumours about Mbappe joining his compatriot at the Santiago Bernabeu have intensified.
This season, the forward has stepped up another gear with teammate Neymar - the only player to be sold for more money than him in football history - out injured for a significant part of PSG's campaign.
Mbappe has followed in the Brazil international's footsteps by winning the highest individual domestic accolade, although he needs to score five in the last league game against Reims this weekend to snatch the European Golden Shoe from Barcelona's Lionel Messi.
He said it was "a source of pride to think that maybe I kept up with him until the last game", adding: "I tell myself that even if I lose (the scoring race), I lose to Messi, one of the greatest players in history."
He became only the second teenager, after Brazil legend Pele, to score in a World Cup final during France's 4-2 triumph over Croatia and his departure would be a blow for PSG. They were knocked out in the Champions League last 16 by Manchester United in embarrassing fashion this season.
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel has, however, claimed that "there are no opportunities for other clubs to buy Kylian this summer".
The German, whose job is under serious pressure after their European humiliation and failure to win multiple trophies for the first time since 2013, insisted: "I've always been convinced that he'll always be our player. This is important to achieve all our objectives."

(REUTERS) - Relegation-threatened Cardiff City earned three vital points with a 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday (March 9), moving them within two points of 17th placed Burnley.
Cardiff got off to a flying start, taking the lead in the fourth minute when Spaniard Victor Camarasa broke from midfield and fed Joseph Murphy whose low cross from the right was turned in at the near post by Junior Hoilett.
Neil Warnock's side, who have just Fulham and Huddersfield below them, had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead in the first half against an out-of-sorts West Ham but went in at the break with just a single goal advantage.
The Hammers, who had 70 per cent possession, brought on Marko Arnautovic for a below-par Felipe Anderson at the interval as Manuel Pellegrini looked to add some life to his attack.
But seven minutes after the restart the decisive second came when Hoilett got past Ryan Fredericks and his cross was headed back across goal by Josh Murphy for Camarasa to turn it on from close range.
All West Ham had to show for their possession was a long range effort from midfielder Declan Rice which struck the Cardiff post.
The defeat was the fifth in the last six away games for West Ham who sit in ninth place.
"If I'm honest, they fully deserved it - we weren't good enough today," said Hammers defender Aaron Cresswell.
"We didn't start well and the crowd were up for it. We knew it would be tough and it certainly was today," he added.
Cardiff, in 18th spot, move to 28 points while Burnley, on 30 points, face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Midfielder Harry Arter said the team's work-rate and spirit had driven them to victory.
"We outworked them and we had a lot of quality on the ball. We raised our level of performance today. We put things right on the pitch after a hard week in training," he said.
"Everything we've done this season has been fighting until the end until the last three games. It's always been a united dressing room. There's been no rift in this squad."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he has "huge respect" for Tottenham Hotspur after Friday's (March 15) Champions League quarter-final draw pitted the Premier League rivals against each other.
With four English clubs in the last eight for the first time in 10 years it was always likely two would clash next month and while Tottenham have suffered a dip in form of late, Guardiola said Mauricio Pochettino's team would be a tough hurdle.
"Huge respect for Tottenham, I know them quite well," Guardiola, speaking at a news conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final at Swansea City, told reporters.
"They have different systems they can use, five at the back, a diamond, 4-2-3-1. I know how good they are at the front with Son (Heung-min), (Harry) Kane, Dele Alli and (Christian) Eriksen. Experience in all departments."
The sides will meet three times in 11 days with Tottenham hosting the first leg on April 9 before the second leg on April 17 and a Premier League clash, also at the Etihad, three days later.
"In that position it was three different competitions," Guardiola said.
"It's game by game, the first games influences the second one, the second one influences the third.
"We travel to London. London is closer than going to Spain or Catalonia," Guardiola added.

 
Guardiola's immediate focus is on beating Championship side Swansea on Saturday to keep alive City's hopes of a quadruple.
They will be huge favourites for that clash in south Wales but will be without defenders John Stones and Vincent Kompany as well as midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho are also out.
"We will have to make changes," Guardiola said. "Stones on bench, not ready to play. He is still recovering.
"Vinny and Kevin not fit. We don't have too many options. Tomorrow is a quarter-final, that is the most important thing by far, to reach the semis."
